I graduated from university this summer with an undergraduate master’s degree in biochemistry. Although I had thoroughly enjoyed carrying out two different laboratory-based research projects during my time at university, I decided I wanted to see where my degree could take me without the need to wear a white coat and goggles.
Studying for a management qualification by distance learning: one manager’s experience
I was a project leader at Prepress Projects when I was studying for the certificate, and following the successful completion and integration of the skills learned into my everyday practice, I was later promoted to the position of programmes manager.
Our internship programme: recruitment
Every year, as we emerge from winter, we welcome a blizzard of applications for our summer intern scheme. The internships we offer give a proper insight into real work at a publishing company, and they’re an incredibly useful way for us to find talented people. The internships are really popular – hardly surprising, as publishing is a highly competitive field. But it’s more than that. Here we treat interns like any other member of staff – there’s no incessant photocopying and no requirement to make the coffee!

My publishing career began in Oxford, following a year of teaching English in Galicia, Spain. Although I was initially reluctant to leave a life of tapas and travel behind, I decided it was time to fulfil my ambition to work in publishing.
