ABOUT THE JOB

This post involves project management, copy-editing and liaison with clients and suppliers.

Your responsibilities will include producing a wide range of publications, including reports, basic textbooks and highly illustrated academic works on a variety of subjects.

You will be resourceful and flexible in outlook and be confident in dealing with academic authors, editors, copy-editors, typesetters, proofreaders and others involved in the prepress process. You must be able to plan and organise your workload and work without supervision.

This post is full-time (37.5 hours weekly).

The salary range is £18,000 to £22,000. Highly experienced candidates may be considered for the position of senior production editor, for which the salary range rises to £26,500.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan and manage the production of several projects for one or more clients, overseeing all stages from receipt of copy to supply of files for printing.
  • Prepare files for on-screen editing and typesetting.
  • Brief and liaise with in-house or external copy-editors, typesetters, artists, proofreaders and indexers and give feedback if appropriate.
  • Liaise with authors, editors, clients and suppliers.
  • Undertake proofreading and on-screen copy-editing.
  • Mark up figures for relabelling or redrawing or size illustrations.
  • Assess the suitability of electronic artwork for reproduction and resolve associated problems.
  • Maintain project databases and records and prepare project status reports for clients.

ABOUT YOU

You must be a life sciences graduate with at least a good first degree and a comprehensive understanding of the academic publishing process. A thorough grounding in science or medical copy-editing and proofreading will be highly advantageous.

You should also be at ease with new technology and familiar with common software packages such as Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Pro. You will need to be well organised, meticulous and resourceful, and able to solve problems on your own.

You will also need to have very good communication skills, with excellent grammar and spelling. You will be happy working alone and as part of a team.
